This is the episode where Benton leaves the ER.
Part 1 revolves around the reason why he left - so he could get custody of his son Reese.
(The actor who plays the step father also played a patient in the ER-season 1. Vondie Curtis-Hall - Transvestite Henry Colton. He was a patient of Carter who jumped off the top of the hospital. Benton was the supervising resident and Dr. Kayson was the Psych consult who came too late. Episode 08 of Season 01).

This is the episode where Benton finishes his last shift in the ER - Also Benton and Carter have a last little chat.
The surgery is on a child gun shot victim who was shot mistakenly by his mother. All surgeons do not beleive that he will survive but Benton still works on him.
